January is a very unique month, not just because it is the beginning of the new year, but also because it is named after Janus, the Roman God of Doors. As you might imagine, this is because January represents the opening of a new opportunity and a new beginning. This is much like the American metaphor that also says new opportunities are like opening new doors: “when one door closes, two doors open.” Additionally, the Roman God of Janus is known as the God of two faces. This also relates to the first month of the year because he has the ability to look at the past with one face, as well as the future with the other. This two faced concept also plays into the distinct weather that January provides in opposing Northern and Southern hemispheres of the globe. This is because January is known to be the coldest month of the year for those who live north of the equator, and the hottest for countries below.

Historically, January did not always exist as a month. The original format of the Roman calendar only had 10 months, and it wasn’t until later on in 700 BCE that January and February were created to make the 12 month calendar we know and use today. Then, in 450 BCE, January became the first month of the year as opposed to the eleventh. Believe it or not, it also took until 46 BCE for January to have the 31 days. Before astronomer’s discovery of leap years January was only given 30 days.

For those born in January, they have a beautiful red birthstone known as garnet. Garnet comes in a large array of colors, however the deep red is typically the one that is associated with January births. Additionally, January has two different flowers given to those born in this month: carnations and snowdrops. Carnations are extremely diverse in colors and species, and the snowdrop flower is known for its white, bell shaped flower that faces the ground.
